This is the least interesting product we make and one of the most useful. A waterproof apron costs a fraction of a chef coat and prevents an entire category of damage, and most kitchens do not own one.

What happens without one

At the dishwash station, a cotton apron is saturated inside an hour. Once it is saturated, it stops protecting and starts transferring: the chef's coat or tee underneath gets soaked, stays damp for the rest of the shift, and goes into the wash with detergent residue and grease that never fully comes out. Do that five days a week and the uniform underneath lasts half as long as the identical uniform on the line.

Materials

  • PVC-coated fabric: the toughest and most chemical-resistant, best for pot wash and butchery. Slightly stiff.
  • PU-coated fabric: lighter and more flexible, better for prep roles that involve more movement.
  • Laminated polyester: the lightest option, good for bar wash-up and ice handling.

All three wipe clean with a cloth and sanitiser between shifts, which is the whole point: they do not add to your laundry load.

Get the length right

Full length, below the knee. A short waterproof apron protects the chest and leaves the trouser front, which is the part that actually catches the splash-back off a sink, completely exposed. Add adjustable neck and waist straps, and specify welded rather than stitched seams where possible, since stitch holes are exactly where water gets through.

Two waterproof aprons per outlet is a rounding error in a uniform budget and it will visibly extend the life of every chef coat in the kitchen.

Hygiene and colour-coding

Because they are wiped rather than washed, waterproof aprons should be colour-coded by station and cleaned on a written schedule. A common system: one colour for raw meat and fish prep, another for vegetable prep, a third for wash-up. It is a small discipline that inspectors notice and that prevents genuine cross-contamination.

How many

Two to three per outlet is enough for most kitchens: one for wash-up, one for prep, one spare. Larger kitchens with a dedicated butchery or fish section should add one per station. Order them alongside your chef coats and canvas aprons so they arrive together.

Ordering

We make waterproof aprons in black and navy, plain or branded. Add them to any uniform order, or ask separately on WhatsApp at +91 98213 34906.

Good to know

Questions restaurateurs ask us about this

Who needs a waterproof apron in a restaurant?

Dishwash, pot wash, fish and meat prep, heavy vegetable prep, and anyone working with ice or bar wash-up. These stations soak a cotton apron within an hour and then soak the uniform underneath it.

What material are waterproof aprons made of?

Usually a PVC or PU-coated fabric, or a laminated polyester. Both wipe clean between shifts rather than needing a wash, which is exactly what a wet station needs.

How long should a waterproof apron be?

Full length, to below the knee, for dishwash and butchery. A shorter waterproof apron is a compromise that leaves the trouser front exposed, which is the part that actually gets wet.
