Restaurant Signage: The Brand Touchpoints Everyone Forgets to Design

Restaurants spend months on interiors and then buy the parking sign from whoever is nearest. That sign is often the first branded object a guest sees, before the door, before the menu, before a single staff member. It deserves the same attention as the menu.
The signage most restaurants forget
- Parking and approach signage. First impression, usually generic.
- Washroom signage. Looked at by nearly every guest, almost always off-brand.
- Wayfinding: stairs, first floor, terrace, exit, staff only.
- Table numbers, which double as a design element.
- Statutory notices, which can be produced in your palette rather than in default red and white.
- Reserved and specials cards at table level.
Each is small. Together they are the majority of the printed words in your building.
Materials by use
- MDF: warm, paintable, printable, ideal for interior boards and wayfinding in cafes and casual dining.
- Acrylic: crisp, contemporary, easy to clean; good for washroom and directional signage and for standoff-mounted plaques.
- Metal: brass, steel or anodised aluminium for identity plaques and premium properties.
- Sunboard and vinyl on flex: large format, temporary, event and promotional signage.
For anything outdoors, specify UV-stable inks and sealed edges. Indian sun and monsoon will find every shortcut within a season.
Sizing: the letter-height rule
Roughly 2.5 cm of capital letter height for every 3 metres of viewing distance. So a washroom sign read from 3 metres wants about 2.5 cm letters; a parking sign read from 15 metres wants around 12 cm. Most restaurant signage errs small, which is why guests end up asking staff for directions the sign was supposed to give.
If staff are regularly answering a question, there is a sign missing. Count the questions for a week and you will have your signage list.
Display and specials boards
A well-made display board earns its cost quickly: it sells the special, it fills the wait at the counter, and it photographs. MDF boards with swappable printed inserts, or a wooden frame with a chalk or magnetic surface, let you change the message without remaking the board.
Keep it in one palette
Signage produced by three different vendors will use three different versions of your brand colour, and the eye notices even when the mind does not. Producing signage alongside your menus and print from one set of brand files is the simplest way to avoid it.
