The menu is handled by every guest, read longer than anything else on the table, and photographed constantly. It is also the item most restaurants remake within a year because they chose the wrong material for how often their menu changes. Here is the honest comparison.

Paper

Best for: menus that change weekly or seasonally, delivery inserts, daily specials.

Cheap, fast to reprint, and completely disposable. Use a heavier stock, 250 to 350 GSM, with a matte lamination if it will be handled more than a few times. The mistake is treating paper as a permanent menu: an unlaminated card in daily service looks tired within three weeks.

MDF boards

Best for: cafes, casual dining, counters and display boards; crisp full-colour graphics on a budget.

MDF takes direct print or a laminated print beautifully, holds a clean edge, and costs far less than solid wood. Its weakness is moisture: unsealed MDF swells at the edges when it gets wet on a table. Insist on sealed and edge-banded boards, which is how we produce them as standard, and they will last one to two years in daily service.

Solid wood

Best for: bars, fine-dine, brand-defining pieces, anything you want photographed.

The most durable and the most premium. Engraved or printed, in rosewood, teak, mango or pine, with a clip, a screw-post or a slot for a paper insert. Wooden menus also age well and can be refinished. They cost the most, and they last long enough to make that reasonable. This is the format we make most often for bars.

Leatherette folders

Best for: fine-dine, hotels, wine lists, bill presentation.

Stitched folders with elastic or screw-post inserts. They feel expensive in the hand, wipe clean, and let you swap the printed pages whenever the menu changes. Available in a wide colour range with debossed or foil-blocked logos. If your menu changes often and your room is formal, this is the right answer.

Sunboard and acrylic

Best for: display boards, standees, temporary and event menus.

Light, cheap and quick. Not a table menu, but the right choice for counter displays, wall-mounted boards and pop-up service.

The right question is not which material is best. It is how often your menu changes. Everything else follows from that.

A decision shortcut

  • Menu changes weekly: clip-style wooden board or leatherette folder with paper inserts.
  • Menu changes seasonally: MDF or wood, reprinted twice a year.
  • Menu is stable: engraved wood or direct-printed MDF.
  • Delivery and takeaway: printed paper, always.
  • Counter and display: MDF or sunboard board.

Quantity and QR

Order one menu per two covers plus twenty percent spares; menus get spilled on and walk out. If you use a digital menu, we can engrave or print the QR onto the board, the bill holder or a standalone table stand, and reprint the QR batch cheaply when your ordering link changes.

Ordering

Send your menu length and a photograph of your interiors and we will propose materials and finishes. See finished menus in our tableware catalogue or on the work gallery. WhatsApp +91 98213 34906.

Good to know

Questions restaurateurs ask us about this

Which menu material lasts longest?

Solid wood and leatherette folders last longest in daily service, typically two to four years. MDF boards last one to two years depending on edge treatment. Paper menus are consumables and should be planned as a recurring cost.

What is the cheapest way to update a menu that changes often?

A clip-style or screw-post system: a durable board or folder that stays, with a printed paper insert that changes. You reprint a page instead of remaking the menu.

Are MDF menus durable enough for a busy restaurant?

Yes, if the edges are sealed and the print is laminated. Unsealed MDF edges swell when they get wet, which is the main failure point. We seal and edge-band MDF menus as standard.
