A cap is the cheapest item in a uniform order and one of the most visible. It sits at the top of every photograph, it is the first thing an inspector looks for, and it is the piece staff most often quietly stop wearing. Getting it right is mostly about comfort.

The four working styles

  • Skull cap or chef beanie. The everyday kitchen standard. Flat, breathable poly-cotton, elasticated or tie-back, washable at 60. Cool enough that people keep it on.
  • Bandana. Popular with bakers, grill sections and younger kitchen teams. Cheap, personal, and easy to brand at the corner.
  • Baseball cap. The default for counters, QSR, delivery and outdoor service. Six-panel, structured or unstructured, embroidered front. Also the single best-selling merchandise item most cafes have.
  • Newsboy or bakerboy cap. A styling choice that suits bakeries, patisseries and heritage-leaning cafes. Photographs beautifully and reads as deliberate.

For winter and for cold-store work, a knitted beanie in the brand colour completes the range.

Fabric and fit

Kitchen headwear should be poly-cotton at 180 to 200 GSM: opaque, breathable, and able to take a hot wash. Look for a sweatband inside the brim on baseball caps, because without one the cap becomes unpleasant within a week. Elasticated or Velcro adjusters matter more than they sound: a cap that does not fit is a cap that ends up on the prep counter.

Branding

Embroidery, every time. Caps are small, curved and washed often, which is the worst possible combination for printing. A flat embroidered mark on the front panel of a baseball cap, or a small crest on the side of a skull cap, is all that is needed. Keep the design to a simple two-colour version of your logo; fine detail disappears at cap scale.

The measure of a good cap is not how it looks in the photograph. It is whether it is still on the person's head at 10pm.

Hygiene, honestly

Head covering exists to keep hair out of food, and inspections in most Indian cities check for it. Whatever style you choose, it needs to actually cover hair rather than sit decoratively on the back of the head. Two caps per person in production roles means one is always clean, which is the practical difference between a policy and a habit.

Ordering

Caps run economically from modest quantities, and they are the easiest item to add to an existing uniform order. Send your team split to +91 98213 34906 on WhatsApp, or see caps we have made on our work gallery.

Good to know

Questions restaurateurs ask us about this

Are chefs legally required to wear head covering in India?

Food safety guidance under FSSAI expects food handlers to keep hair covered while handling food, and most local licensing inspections check for it. Caps, skull caps, bandanas and hairnets all satisfy it, so choose the one your team will actually keep on.

What is the difference between a skull cap and a chef hat?

A traditional tall toque is largely ceremonial now and mostly seen at events and in press photographs. A flat skull cap or a beanie-style chef cap is the everyday working option: cooler, easier to launder and less likely to be abandoned by the second hour of service.

How many caps should we order per person?

Two per person in production roles. Caps absorb sweat every shift and need the same rotation as any other daily-wear garment, and a single cap means an unwashed cap by Wednesday.
