A name badge costs less than a bottle of house wine and changes how guests talk to your team. It is the highest-return item in any hospitality supply order, and a surprising number of restaurants still skip it.

Why it works

Named staff get thanked, named staff get mentioned in reviews, and named staff get complained about less. A guest who has to say "excuse me" is in a different relationship with your restaurant than one who can say "Ravi, could we get some water?". It also, quietly, raises accountability: people behave differently when their name is on their chest.

Materials

  • Acrylic. The default. Printed or laser-engraved, available in gloss, matte and metallic finishes, in any brand colour. Best balance of cost, durability and appearance.
  • Metal, laser-cut. Brass, steel or anodised aluminium, engraved or etched. Reads premium, suits hotels, fine-dine and management. More expensive and heavier.
  • PVC. Cheapest, lightest, good for events, casual staff and high-turnover teams.
  • Wood or bamboo. Laser-engraved, suits cafes and natural-palette brands.

The reusable slot badge

Worth knowing about. The badge body carries your logo and stays with the restaurant; the name sits on a printed insert that slides in and can be swapped when staff change. For teams with turnover, this cuts the reorder cost to almost nothing and means a new joiner has a proper badge on day one rather than in week three.

Order twenty-five percent more badges than you have staff. The gap between a new hire starting and their badge arriving is exactly when the badge matters most.

Fixings

Magnetic backs are what staff prefer: no pinholes, no damage to knitwear or fine shirting, and easy to move between garments. Use pins for kitchen and back-of-house roles where a magnet can be knocked loose. Crocodile clips work on aprons and lanyards.

What to put on it

First name, large and legible from a metre. Role underneath in smaller type if it helps guests, particularly for managers, hostesses and sommeliers. A small logo if the uniform does not already carry one. Nothing else. Badges that try to include a surname, an employee number and a tagline become unreadable at the distance they are actually read from.

Beyond the badge

A metal lapel pin in the brand mark for managers, and tie pins for formal service, complete the set. They cost little, photograph well and read as attention to detail. All are made alongside badges in our merchandise range.

Ordering

Questions restaurateurs ask us about this

What material is best for a restaurant name badge?

Acrylic with a printed or engraved face is the most common and the best value. Metal laser-cut badges look more premium and suit hotels and fine-dine. PVC is the cheapest and suits high-turnover or event teams.

Should badges be pinned or magnetic?

Magnetic fixings do not damage the uniform and are strongly preferred by staff, particularly on knitwear and fine shirting. Pins are cheaper and more secure in physical roles. Most of our clients use magnets for service and pins for kitchen and back of house.

What should a name badge say?

First name and role, at most. Adding a surname reduces staff comfort and adds nothing for the guest. A logo is optional; if the badge is worn on a uniform that already carries a crest, the name is enough.
