Cork, MDF, Leatherette or Paper: Which Coaster Belongs on Your Table?

Coasters are the cheapest branded object on your table and the one guests are most likely to pick up, photograph and pocket. Four materials cover almost every use case.

Cork

Best for: cafes, casual dining, cold drinks, brands with a warm or natural palette.

Cork absorbs condensation, feels good in the hand, and prints in full colour with a slightly softened, textural finish that suits wood-and-warm-light interiors. It is light enough to be die-cut into a logo shape cheaply. It stains over time and does not survive a soaking, so plan to replace annually in busy service. It is also the material most likely to leave with a guest, which, given it carries your logo, is not entirely a loss.

MDF

Best for: crisp graphics, bars, brands with strong artwork.

MDF gives the sharpest full-colour print of the four and holds it. It does not absorb, so condensation sits on the surface, which matters for beer service and matters not at all for cocktails served up. Sealed edges are essential; unsealed MDF swells at the corners. Lasts one to two years in daily service.

Leatherette

Best for: premium bars, fine-dine, brands matching menu folders.

Debossed or foil-blocked leatherette coasters feel expensive and wipe clean. They pair naturally with leatherette menu folders and bill holders, which is how most of our clients order them. The most durable of the four and the most expensive per piece.

SBS paper

Best for: high-volume bars, breweries, events, anywhere coasters are consumables.

Thick pulp or SBS board printed in full colour. Highly absorbent, very cheap per piece, and disposable, which solves the theft and staining problem by embracing it. Breweries and high-volume bars should generally use paper and stop trying to preserve coasters.

Coasters are not a durable good. Decide whether you are buying something to keep or something to give away, and buy accordingly.

Shape and print

Round is standard, square reads modern, hexagonal reads craft, and a die-cut logo shape reads as a brand that pays attention. Gold-foil and spot-UV finishes are available on MDF and leatherette and photograph beautifully under bar lighting.

Quantities

Four to six per table for reusable materials, plus a spares box. For paper, work out consumption per cover per month and order quarterly. Either way, order more than you think: coasters are the most-lost item on any restaurant table.
